Is it normal to have a loose stone in my ring?

Why Is My Diamond Loose?

Sometimes you might hear a rattle or feel your diamond spin. Other times, you might not notice anything at all. Having a loose diamond is common, but it can still be worrying.

When we sell a ring or do repairs, our team checks to make sure all stones are tight and secure. So, how does a diamond become loose?

Most of the time, it’s just from living your normal life.

Think about how often you bump your hands—against a doorframe, inside a dryer, or on a banister. Your ring might even get caught in a jacket sleeve or pocket. These little bumps can shift the prongs holding your diamond, making it loose.

Is It Normal for Diamonds to Become Loose?

Yes, it’s normal.

While loose stones can be caused by a problem with the ring, it usually happens from everyday wear and tear.

It’s like getting a flat tire on your car—not because the tire is bad, but because it hit something sharp.

Why Did My New Ring Have a Loose Stone So Soon, While My Old Ring Stayed Secure for Years?

This is a common question. Not all jewelry is the same. Some rings might never have a loose stone, while others need more frequent care.

It depends on how the stones are set and where they’re placed. For example, a ring with stones all around (like an eternity band) might need more maintenance than a ring with stones only on the top. A common prong setting is also more likely to have loose stones than a channel-set band, which has metal on both sides of the stones for protection.

How Can I Prevent Stones from Getting Loose?

The best thing to do is to take your rings off when you’re working with your hands. Avoid wearing them while working out, doing laundry, or washing dishes, as it’s easy to bump your hands.

At Hingham Jewelers, we offer free inspection and cleaning of your rings. If you’re nearby, drop in, and we’ll check your stones to make sure they’re secure. If anything is loose, we can fix it right away.

Tightening a loose stone is usually an easy repair, and it’s much simpler than replacing a lost stone.
