The Ultimate Guide to Lavender Gemstones: Lavender Sapphire, Iolite & Amethyst
Lavender is one of the most-requested colors for alternative engagement rings: softer than royal purple, more distinctive than a classic diamond, and flattering in white, yellow or rose gold. Three gemstones deliver it best, and they differ a lot in hardness, price and how they behave in daily wear.
- Lavender sapphire — the most durable choice, built for everyday engagement rings.
- Iolite — a violet-blue stone that shifts color as it moves, at an approachable price.
- Amethyst — the classic purple gem, from pale lilac to deep grape, and February's birthstone.
Below you'll find what each stone is, how it wears, how to choose between them, and the five Giliarto rings we recommend for each.
Lavender Sapphire
Lavender sapphire is the best lavender stone for an engagement ring you'll wear every day. It's corundum, the same mineral as blue sapphire and ruby, rated 9 on the Mohs hardness scale — second only to diamond.
Color. Sapphire comes in nearly every color; anything other than blue is called a "fancy" sapphire. Lavender tones come from trace elements in the crystal and range from pale lilac to a richer violet. Many show a subtle shift between cooler and warmer purple in different light.
Natural vs. lab-grown. Natural lavender sapphires are mined mainly in Sri Lanka, Madagascar and East Africa. Lab-grown sapphire has the same chemistry, hardness and sparkle, with cleaner clarity and more consistent color at a lower price. Each Giliarto listing states which type it uses.
Pros: extremely scratch-resistant, holds a polish for decades, safe in any setting style. Cons: costs more than iolite or amethyst of the same size.

Iolite
Iolite is the most affordable way to get a rich violet-blue center stone, and it has a trick no other stone on this list does: it changes color as you turn it. It's the gem variety of the mineral cordierite, rated 7–7.5 on the Mohs scale.
Color. Iolite is strongly pleochroic, meaning it shows different colors from different angles — violet-blue from one direction, pale gray or straw-yellow from another. A good cutter orients the stone so the face-up color is the deepest violet.
The Viking legend. Iolite is nicknamed the "Viking compass." The story goes that Norse navigators looked through thin slices of it to locate the sun on overcast days. It makes for a great story, though historians treat it as legend rather than fact.
Sources. Most iolite comes from India, Sri Lanka, Madagascar and Brazil, and it's rarely treated.
Pros: distinctive color shift, natural and untreated, budget-friendly at larger sizes. Cons: softer than sapphire and can chip from a hard knock along one direction, so protective settings (halos, bezels, prongs set low) are the smart choice for daily wear.

Amethyst
Amethyst is the classic purple gemstone and the easiest way to get a large lavender-to-violet center at a modest price. It's a variety of quartz, rated 7 on the Mohs scale, and the birthstone for February.
Color. Amethyst runs from pale lilac to deep grape. The lightest, pinkish-lavender shade is often sold as "Rose de France" amethyst — the closest amethyst gets to true lavender.
Symbolism. The name comes from the ancient Greek amethystos, "not intoxicated" — the Greeks believed the stone protected its wearer from drunkenness. Today it's associated with calm, clarity and sincerity.
Sources. Brazil, Uruguay and Zambia supply most of the world's amethyst.
Pros: widely available, affordable even in big sizes, rich saturated color. Cons: softer than sapphire, so it can scuff over years of daily wear; its color can fade with long exposure to strong sunlight or high heat.

How to Choose Your Lavender Ring
Start with how the ring will be worn, then pick the color and metal you love.
- Lifestyle. Wearing it every day, working with your hands or at the gym? Choose lavender sapphire. For a ring you'll wear more gently, iolite and amethyst are excellent.
- Color. Want soft, true lavender? Look at lavender sapphire or a pale Rose de France amethyst. Prefer deeper violet-blue? Choose iolite. Want bold, saturated purple? Choose a deeper amethyst.
- Cut. Ovals and rounds show color evenly and maximize sparkle. Emerald and step cuts highlight color depth with a cleaner, architectural look.
- Metal. White gold and platinum keep lavender cool and crisp. Rose gold warms it toward pink. Yellow gold gives the strongest contrast. Black rhodium makes deep purple look dramatic.
- Setting. Halos and bezels add protection for softer stones like iolite and amethyst. Floral and twig settings suit lavender's romantic, nature-inspired feel.
Care and Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush clean all three stones safely. Rinse well and dry with a lint-free cloth.
| Stone | Ultrasonic cleaner | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Lavender sapphire | Generally safe | Very little; remove it for heavy work to protect the setting |
| Iolite | Avoid | Hard knocks, which can chip it along one direction |
| Amethyst | Use with care | Prolonged strong sunlight and high heat, which can fade the color |
Whatever the stone, take your ring off for the gym, gardening and cleaning with harsh chemicals, and have the prongs checked once a year.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best lavender gemstone for an engagement ring?
Lavender sapphire. At 9 on the Mohs scale it resists scratches and chips far better than iolite or amethyst, so it holds up to daily wear for a lifetime.
Is lavender sapphire the same as purple sapphire?
They're the same gemstone. "Lavender" usually describes the lighter, softer end of the purple sapphire range.
Is iolite durable enough for an engagement ring?
Yes, with a protective setting. Iolite is 7–7.5 on the Mohs scale and can chip from a hard knock, so a halo or bezel setting is a smart choice for everyday wear.
Does amethyst fade?
It can lose some color after long exposure to strong sunlight or high heat. Normal wear and storage away from direct sun keep it vibrant.
Which lavender stone is the most affordable?
Amethyst, followed by iolite. Lavender sapphire costs the most but offers the best durability.
What metal looks best with lavender gemstones?
White gold and platinum keep lavender cool and bright, rose gold warms it toward pink, and yellow gold gives the most contrast.
Are Giliarto rings made to order?
Yes. Every Giliarto ring is made to order in Philadelphia in recycled gold or platinum.
