FAQ

About Lab-Grown Diamonds

Yes — lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds in every measurable sense. They are chemically, physically, and optically identical to mined diamonds: pure carbon in a cubic crystal structure, with a hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale — the hardest natural material on Earth. The only difference is origin. Mined diamonds form over billions of years under the Earth's mantle; lab-grown diamonds are produced in advanced facilities that replicate those same conditions in weeks. A gemologist cannot distinguish between them without specialized equipment. Lab-grown diamonds are graded by the same international standards (IGI, GIA) and carry the same certifications as mined stones.

The chemical and physical properties are identical — both are pure carbon, both score 10 on the Mohs scale, both exhibit the same brilliance, fire, and scintillation. The differences are: origin (laboratory vs. underground mine), price (lab-grown diamonds cost 60–75% less for equivalent quality), and environmental impact (lab-grown requires no mining, no land disruption, and no conflict risk). Lab-grown diamonds are graded by the same color, clarity, cut, and carat standards as mined diamonds. In 2026, lab-grown diamonds account for over 61% of all engagement ring purchases in the United States.

D-colorless is the highest color grade in the diamond grading scale, which runs from D (completely colorless) to Z (visibly yellow or brown). A D-colorless diamond has absolutely no color tint visible to the naked eye — or even under 10x magnification. At Giliarto, most accent stones and many center stones are graded D-colorless, meaning you are receiving the top color grade available regardless of whether the diamond is lab-grown or mined.

VVS1 (Very Very Slightly Included, grade 1) is one of the highest clarity grades available, just below Flawless and Internally Flawless. VVS1 diamonds have inclusions so minute they are extremely difficult to see even under 10x magnification by a trained gemologist. To the naked eye, a VVS1 diamond is completely eye-clean. At Giliarto, accent stones are graded VS2–VVS1 and center stones are often VVS1, ensuring every piece delivers exceptional visual purity.

IGI (International Gemological Institute) is one of the world's leading independent gemstone grading laboratories. An IGI certificate confirms a diamond's exact grade: carat weight, color, clarity, and cut. All Giliarto lab-grown diamond center stones come with an IGI certificate, giving you independent, third-party verification of exactly what you are purchasing. The certificate travels with your ring and can be used for insurance purposes.

Forever. Diamonds — lab-grown or mined — score 10 on the Mohs hardness scale, making them the hardest natural material known. A lab-grown diamond will not scratch, fade, cloud, or degrade over time under normal wear. The setting (gold or platinum) may show wear over decades, but the stone itself is permanent. For insurance purposes, lab-grown diamonds are treated identically to mined diamonds.

Yes — particularly for buyers who prioritize value, ethics, and quality. Lab-grown diamonds deliver the same beauty, durability, and certification as mined diamonds at 60–75% lower cost. That means you can choose a larger stone, a higher grade, or a more elaborate setting for the same budget. The trade-off is that lab-grown diamonds do not carry the same resale value as mined diamonds — but neither do most jewelry purchases. If you are buying an engagement ring to wear and cherish (rather than as an investment), lab-grown is an objectively excellent choice.

Lab-grown diamonds and moissanite are both excellent stones, but they are different materials. Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds — pure carbon, Mohs 10, graded by diamond standards (IGI/GIA). Moissanite is silicon carbide (SiC), a separate gemstone with a Mohs hardness of 9.25 and a higher refractive index than diamond, meaning moissanite produces more colorful "fire" (rainbow flashes) but slightly different brilliance. Moissanite is more affordable than lab-grown diamonds. Giliarto offers both — lab-grown diamonds for buyers who want a certified diamond, and moissanite for buyers who prefer maximum brilliance at a lower price point.

Cubic zirconia (CZ) is a synthetic material — zirconium dioxide — that simulates the appearance of a diamond but is entirely different in composition and durability. CZ scores 8–8.5 on the Mohs scale (versus diamond's 10), scratches and clouds over time, and carries no gemological certification. Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds. Giliarto does not use cubic zirconia in any piece.

About Alexandrite & Colored Gemstones

Alexandrite is one of the rarest and most extraordinary gemstones in the world — a variety of chrysoberyl (BeAl₂O₄) that exhibits a dramatic color-change effect caused by the presence of chromium. In daylight or fluorescent light, alexandrite appears green to teal. Under incandescent light (candlelight, warm indoor bulbs), it shifts to purple, violet, or red. This phenomenon — called the alexandrite effect — is unique to alexandrite among all gemstones and makes it one of the most prized stones for collectors and jewelry enthusiasts. Alexandrite scores 8.5 on the Mohs scale, making it exceptionally durable for everyday wear.

Yes — this is its defining characteristic. The color shift is caused by chromium atoms in the stone's crystal structure, which absorb different wavelengths of light depending on the light source. The effect is not a trick of photography or lighting angle: the stone genuinely displays two distinct colors depending on whether you are in natural daylight or warm artificial light. The strength of the color change varies by stone; Giliarto's lab-grown alexandrite exhibits strong, vivid color change from green to purple.

Yes. Lab-grown alexandrite is chemically and optically identical to natural alexandrite — the same chrysoberyl composition (BeAl₂O₄ + chromium), the same color-change effect, the same hardness (8.5 Mohs), the same refractive index. The only difference is origin. Natural alexandrite of fine quality is one of the rarest gemstones in existence and commands prices of $10,000–$100,000+ per carat. Lab-grown alexandrite delivers the same phenomenon — the same color change, the same beauty — at a fraction of the price, with full ethical traceability.

Moissanite is a gemstone composed of silicon carbide (SiC), originally discovered in a meteorite crater by Nobel Prize winner Henri Moissan in 1893. Natural moissanite is extraordinarily rare; modern moissanite is lab-created. Moissanite has a refractive index higher than diamond (2.65 vs. 2.42), producing exceptional brilliance and a distinctive colorful "fire." It scores 9.25 on the Mohs hardness scale — harder than any gemstone except diamond. Moissanite is an ethical, durable, and beautiful alternative to diamond, offered by Giliarto in D-colorless and near-colorless grades.

All stones Giliarto uses in engagement rings are selected for durability appropriate to daily wear.

About Customization & Design

Yes — every Giliarto ring is fully customizable. Using the Cleo 3D platform, you can choose your metal (white, yellow, or rose gold; platinum), adjust stone size, select engraving, and visualize your exact ring in 3D before production begins. You can also request custom modifications — different stone shapes, alternative center stones, or entirely bespoke designs — by contacting Giliarto directly before placing your order.

Yes. Giliarto's Cleo 3D platform lets you personalize and preview your ring in a photorealistic 3D render before production begins. Click "Personalize in 3D" on any product page to start. If you have a specific custom request beyond what the tool offers, contact the team and a 3D CAD preview can be arranged.

In most cases, yes. Many Giliarto settings are available with alternative center stones — different gemstone types (alexandrite, moissanite, sapphire, aquamarine, opal), different shapes (round, oval, emerald, pear, cushion, kite, shield), and different sizes. Contact Giliarto before placing your order to discuss availability and pricing for your preferred stone.

Yes — Giliarto offers a full 3D CAD design service for bespoke pieces. If you have a design in mind that is not in the existing catalog, contact the team with your concept (sketches, reference images, or a written description) and a custom quote will be prepared. Visit 3D CAD Service for details.

  • 14K White Gold — classic, cool-toned, pairs beautifully with colorless and teal/green stones
  • 14K Yellow Gold — warm, traditional, trending strongly in 2026
  • 14K Rose Gold — romantic, warm pink tone, flatters all skin tones
  • 18K Gold — available on select pieces; richer color, slightly softer than 14K
  • PT900 Platinum — the most durable and hypoallergenic option; naturally white, does not require rhodium plating
  • Titanium / Tungsten — available for men's bands

All gold is solid (not gold-filled or gold-plated) unless specified otherwise. Black rhodium plating is available on select pieces as a surface treatment.

Black rhodium is a surface treatment applied over solid gold or platinum that creates a deep, dramatic near-black finish. It is durable but not permanent — the plating will gradually show wear on high-contact areas over time, particularly on the inner band. This is normal for all rhodium-plated jewelry. Re-plating is recommended every 1–2 years to maintain the dark finish. Giliarto can re-plate your ring; contact the team for pricing.

Yes — custom engraving is available on most pieces. Select the engraving option at checkout or during 3D personalization. Text, dates, coordinates, and short phrases are all possible. Note: engraved pieces cannot be returned or exchanged per Giliarto's return policy.

How do I find my ring size?

The most accurate method is to visit a local jeweler and have your finger measured with a ring mandrel — this is free at most jewelry stores. At home, you can wrap a thin strip of paper around your finger, mark where it overlaps, measure the length in millimeters, and use a ring size conversion chart. Note that fingers change size throughout the day (larger in warmth, smaller in cold) — measure in the evening for the most accurate result. Giliarto offers ring sizes 4 through 12, including half and quarter sizes.

Giliarto offers resizing services. Contact the team as soon as possible after receiving your ring. Resizing fees depend on the complexity of the design and the amount of adjustment needed. Note that eternity bands and tension rings cannot be resized due to their construction.

How long does production take?

All Giliarto rings are made to order — production begins when you place your order. Standard production time is 15–21 business days. High-complexity custom orders may take up to 25 business days. If you need your ring by a specific date, contact Giliarto before ordering to confirm whether expediting is possible.

Yes. Free standard ground shipping is offered on all orders to the entire United States. Free international shipping is available on orders over $1,200. Expedited shipping is available at additional cost — contact Giliarto for options if you need faster delivery.

Yes — Giliarto ships worldwide. International orders over $1,200 qualify for free shipping. Please note that international orders are subject to a $500 restocking fee if returned, and import/export taxes are the buyer's responsibility.

Yes. Once your order ships, you will receive a tracking number via email. All orders are shipped fully insured with delivery confirmation.

Yes — cancellations and changes are possible up to the shipping date. Once an order has shipped, or if it is a special/custom order, changes and cancellations are no longer possible. Contact Giliarto as soon as possible if you need to make a change.

Returns & Warranty

Giliarto offers a 7-day money-back guarantee from the date of receipt. Items must be returned in original, unworn, undamaged, unaltered condition in their original packaging, including all documentation and diamond certificates. All returns, exchanges, and cancellations are subject to a 4.5% transaction fee. Return shipping and insurance costs are the buyer's responsibility and must be sent via FedEx or UPS overnight or 2-day, fully insured.

Non-returnable items: Special orders, engraved jewelry, eternity bands, and tension rings cannot be returned or exchanged.

Giliarto offers a limited lifetime guarantee against manufacturing defects and workmanship. The warranty does not cover normal wear and tear, lost or stolen items, chipped or broken stones from impact, or damage caused by misuse. It also does not cover repairs made by anyone other than an authorized Giliarto representative. For comprehensive coverage including loss and theft, Giliarto recommends insuring your jewelry through Brite.co.

If a stone is lost due to a manufacturing defect (e.g., a prong was not properly set), contact Giliarto — this falls under the workmanship warranty. If a stone is lost due to normal wear (worn-down prongs over time, snagging, or impact), a repair fee applies. Giliarto recommends annual professional inspections to check prong integrity, which is the most common preventable cause of stone loss.

Care & Maintenance

Clean your ring regularly with warm water, a small amount of mild dish soap, and a soft toothbrush. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a lint-free cloth. Remove your ring before swimming (chlorine and saltwater can damage gold over time), showering (soap buildup dulls stones), cleaning with household chemicals, and high-impact activities. Store in the original box or a soft pouch to prevent scratching. Professional cleaning once per year is recommended to check prong integrity and restore brilliance.

Black rhodium requires slightly more care than standard gold. Avoid contact with harsh chemicals, perfumes, and abrasives. Clean gently with a soft cloth — do not use ultrasonic cleaners or steam cleaners on rhodium-plated pieces. The plating on the inner band will naturally wear faster than the outer surface due to friction; this is normal. Re-plating is recommended every 1–2 years to maintain the dark finish.

Alexandrite is durable (8.5 Mohs) and can be cleaned safely with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners if the stone has any fracture-filling treatment (Giliarto's lab-grown alexandrite is untreated, so ultrasonic cleaning is generally safe, but check with the team if uncertain). Store separately to avoid contact with harder stones that could scratch the gold setting.
